What’s happening on Ferry Road and why

The Christchurch City Council has initiated significant repair works on the stormwater mains beneath Ferry Road, leading to temporary traffic and parking adjustments.

The current phase of the project involves enlarging manholes on Ferry Road to enhance access to the stormwater mains, a critical step for the forthcoming phase of relining the existing pipes.

This enlargement necessitates the excavation of Ferry Road near the intersections of Ensors Road and Aldwins Road.

Speed restrictions have been imposed on all lanes of Ferry Road, Ensors Road, and Aldwins Road, with a 30km/h speed limit near the construction sites.

Additionally, right-turning restrictions are in place at the intersection and adjoining side roads, including a prohibition on right turns from Ferry Road into Aldwins Road (from the east) and Ensors Road (from the west).

Despite these disruptions, local businesses remain operational, with customer access and parking available via Ferry Road and Frederick Street a council spokesperson said.

The stormwater work at the intersection is expected to conclude by the end of February.

Subsequent underground relining work will extend further along Ferry Road.

Workers are scheduled to revisit the intersection in March to finalise the stormwater repairs.

Alongside the stormwater project, traffic signals and cables at the Ferry Road, Ensors Road, and Aldwins Road intersection are being replaced.

Council staff are also using the opportunity to install “safe speed platforms” at the intersection, with this extra transport work anticipated to start at the end of February - lasting approximately five weeks.
