Keeping your dog safe and happy this holiday period

As the Christmas season draws near, the Christchurch City Council's Animal Management team is calling on pet owners to ensure the well-being of their pets during the holidays.

Lionel Bridger, the Animal Service Manager, emphasises the importance of planning for pet care if owners are planning to travel.

"If you’re planning on heading away over the holiday season, please ensure you have made suitable arrangements to keep your animals safe and happy," Bridger advises.

He suggests arranging a pet sitter, entrusting the care to a family member or friend, or booking an animal kennel for dogs.

For those who might leave their animals at home for brief periods, Bridger offers practical advice.

"Ensure your dog is checked on at least twice a day and has been taken for a walk," he says.

He also recommends leaving a radio or television on to provide background noise, which can help pets feel less lonely.

Highlighting the sociable nature of dogs, Bridger stresses that it's best not to leave them alone for extended periods.

"Dogs are sociable animals, so it’s really best for them not to be left alone while their owners are away on holiday," he explains.

He reminds pet owners that dogs are not just pets, but part of the family, underscoring the importance of ensuring they receive the care and attention they need.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Bridger reiterates the responsibility of pet owners: “Our dogs are our friends, they’re part of our families and it’s important to make sure they’re well looked after.”
