Victoria Square vandalism costs council $14,000

The Christchurch City Council has spent $14,000 on clean up costs after vandals attacked the Captain James Cook statue in Victoria Square on Anzac Day.

They also poured red dye into Bowker Fountain and left pro-palestinian signs in the pool.

Some of the words spray painted on James Cook statue said “from the river to the sea" while another read “f*** Captain Cook, another said “no to imperialism.”

Council contractors cleaned up most of the graffiti by Friday afternoon.

A Christchurch City council spokeswoman confirmed to Chris Lynch Media that cost of the clean-up in Victoria Square following the protest on Anzac Day was $14,000.

The Council will be a installing security camera in the Victoria Square which will be monitored 24 hours a day the spokeswoman said.

The council had made a complaint with police over the vandalism.
