Police speaking to people seen walking on Port Hills track before fire

Christchurch police have confirmed they have spoken to several people who were seen leaving a walking track moments after the Port Hills fire started.

Police and fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

Investigators had appealed to the public for video and photos before and after the fire started.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said “police have spoken to people in Hoon Hay Valley Road who witnessed others on a walking track on the hill before the fire, who then drove off.

“Police have also spoken to the people in the car, and others in the area.

“It appears these people are all likely witnesses at this time.

Police are working through what they have said, as investigations are ongoing.”
