National leader Christopher Luxon also managed to gain ground in the preferred prime minister stakes, rising to 20%, up two points from May.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins was on 24%, down one point.

Act Party leader David Seymour was steady on seven per cent.

The ACT party attracted 12% of the party vote in the poll - up one point - the Greens bouncing back three points to 10% and the Māori and New Zealand First were on 3%.

In this latest poll, National would get 46 Mps - add to that 15 From Act and that's 61 - the exact number needed to form a government.

Labour's 43 seats, plus 12 from the Greens and four from the Maori Party is 59 - not enough for them to be in the driving seat.
