Motorcyclist dead after failing to stop for police in Christchurch

UPDATED: Words changed from ‘minutes’ to ‘seconds’ - updated from police.

A motorcyclist has died after a crash involving a car in central Christchurch last night.

It happened around 11:40pm at the intersection of Barbadoes Street and Edgeware Road.

Canterbury Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said seconds earlier, the motorcyclist was signalled to stop by Police, but did not do so and fled.

“Police did not pursue. The motorcyclist received immediate medical assistance but died at the scene.

“The female driver of the car received minor to moderate injuries.

“Our thoughts are with the deceased man’s family.

“Police will be referring the incident to the IPCA, and our Serious Crash and Critical Incident investigations are in their early stages.

Anyone who saw what happened who has not yet spoken to Police is asked to please come forward.”
