Investigation after death of Christchurch Men’s Prison inmate
An investigation has been launched after a man died at Christchurch Men’s Prison.
In a statement sent to Chris Lynch Media Christchurch Men’s Prison Director Jo Harrex said “sadly, a man in custody at Christchurch Men’s Prison passed away yesterday.
“Our staff made every effort to save him, however they were sadly unable to revive him.
“While investigations are underway, there is no indication that his death is suspicious.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends. Other men in the prison and staff are being provided with support, including access to Chaplains and cultural support where requested.
“All deaths in custody are referred to the Coroner for investigation and determination of cause of death. Police have been advised and are responsible for notifying the man’s next of kin.
An investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate will also be carried out.”
