Emergency services at large fire in North Canterbury

Fire and Emergency crews are responding to a large fire in North Canterbury.

They were called to Waikari Valley Road in the Hurunui district just before 9PM.

The small town of Waikari has had their power disconnected as a precautionary measure.

A Fire and Emergency command unit is being set up to coordinate firefighting efforts.

Crews from Waikari, Hurunui, Scargill, Hawarden and Waipara have been called to the scene.

Residents from Amberley have reported seeing smoke from the large fire.
