The cleanup continues today after a small tornado went through Cobden this morning.

It went through Cardwell, Ward and Fox Streets at 12.50AM

Grey District Mayor Tania Gibson said she’s seen the hard-working volunteers at the Cobden Fire Station who have been up most of the night and are still on the job helping to make the affected home’s weather tight.

“The residents in the worse-hit houses are thankfully safe and unharmed and are getting the resources they need.”

Gibson said the Cobden School pool roof has partially lifted and there is debris where you can see it cut through the school and affected areas.

“A big thanks to our Fire Teams and Police for the work they do.

Our Grey District Council building inspectors are also working with the residents who have damaged sites and Electronet have checked the lines.

“We have just had a Civil Defence update meeting and South Westland still has road closures and power outages but they are being worked on.

The good news is weather warnings have been lifted so hopefully now the issues that have arisen can be worked on and fixed. Thank you again to everyone who has been working throughout the night across the coast.”
