Car spiked following dangerous joyride, 4 teens arrested in New Brighton

Four teenagers have been arrested following a dangerous fleeing driver incident in Christchurch overnight.

A police spokesman told Chris Lynch Media police saw a stolen vehicle at 1:34am in Avonhead which failed to stop for police.

A resident in New Brighton even captured the police pursuit on his CCTV.

“There were a number of police cars hurtling past my place trying to stop the driver.

The car tyres were all punctuated and there was plenty of smoke coming out of the vehicle being chased.

The police spokesman said the car was followed and was eventually spiked, coming to a stop on Marine Parade carpark at around 2am.

Two 15-year-olds have been charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, and one 15-year-old faces a number of charges including unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, resist police and driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner.

Another youth was referred to Youth Aid.

They were all expected to appear in the Canterbury Youth Court today.

Enquiries were ongoing the police spokesman said.
