Family escape vehicle stuck in rising waters in Waimakariri

A family has had a lucky escape after their vehicle became stuck in rising waters in the Waimakariri River.

A police spokesman told Chris Lynch emergency services were called at 12.45pm to help a vehicle stuck in the river off Diversion Road.

“It appears that the water was rising quite fast and the two adults and child were finding it difficult to get to dry land.”

Chris Lynch Media understands the child is a 2-year-old.

The police spokesman said “thankfully, they made it to the river bank safely, but the vehicle is still in the river.

Nobody has been injured and police have taken them to Kaiapoi to be picked up.

A St John ambulance spokesman said they were not required.
